NaPoWriMo 2017: #8 (a poem with repetiton)

No Child of God…

No child of God should ever suffer such horror–
of being the innocent bull’s-eyes
at which chemical weapons are aimed.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of being the dead, dust-covered targets
at which TV cameras are trained.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of having their deaths pimped as false lament
in political speeches justifying more war.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of seeing schools built and kept for the rich
while the ones they attend remain poor

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of sitting alone before empty tables and plates
praying for the hope of a next meal.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of being seen, yet overlooked by leaders
while their city does not have clean water, STILL.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of believing a badge that says “protect and serve”
is a warning that means “assault and batter”

No child of God should ever suffer such horror—
of being isolated due to skin color or social class
because not enough people believe All Lives Matter.

No child of God should ever suffer such horror.

This is the mantra and lie we say to ourselves,
shaking anonymous heads behind computer screens,
ignorantly clasping smart phones like rosary beads
in dry palms. We pray to ourselves—
the too busy, pagan post-modern gods,
allowing our children to suffer such horrors,
because we have forgotten about
Them.
